Volcanic Activity
The Bahamas does not have any volcanoes on the islands. The closest volcano to the Bahamas is the Momotombo volcano. The Momotombo volcano is located in Nicaragua and is 1,699 km away from the Bahamas. The perfectly shaped cone of the Momotombo Volcano is hard to miss as it towers 1,258 meters above sea level on the northern side of Lake Managua. It is known for its violent eruption in 1609 that caused the town of Leon to move and settle westward. Gases are continuously emitted and the temperatures of certain parts of the volcano exceed 500°C. A geothermal plant has been set up at the base of the volcano, producing electricity from the volcano's heat. The volcano is monitored by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER).
