Volcanic Activity

The Bahamas does not have any volcanoes on the islands. The closest volcano to the Bahamas is the Momotombo volcano. The Momotombo volcano is located in Nicaragua and is 1,699 km away from the Bahamas. The perfectly shaped cone of the Momotombo Volcano is hard to miss as it towers 1,258 meters above sea level on the northern side of Lake Managua. It is known for its violent eruption in 1609 that caused the town of Leon to move and settle westward. Gases are continuously emitted and the temperatures of certain parts of the volcano exceed 500°C. A geothermal plant has been set up at the base of the volcano, producing electricity from the volcano's heat.

The volcano is monitored by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER). According to SINAPRED, to prepare for an eruption it states that the citizens must participate in the development of the response plan of our community or neighborhood, so that they know the evacuation plan, evacuation routes, security zones and concentration zones. Make sure to keep in their homes a first aid kit, a portable radio and a hand lamp with batteries. Stay informed of the news provided by the authorities. Keep containers to store drinking water in properly covered containers. Also, to inform their family and friends about the response plan of the neighborhood or community and indicate the evacuation routes and safety zones.

  1. Hi Arianna, nice post! It was nice to learn that the Bahamas does not consist of any volcanoes because I used to think that there were volcanoes there. It was also nice to learn about the nearest volcano in Nicaragua. Keep posting!!

  2. Hello, Arianna. How nice! Fortunately, your country has no volcano, and me, too. But we have no safety zone from disaster. So, according to SINAPRED, I need to prepare for disaster. Thank you for your post.

  3. Hi Arianna, I assumed the Bahamas was an Island filled with active Volcanoes, but after reading this, you have educated me otherwise! Thank you for sharing.

  4. Hi Arianna!
Good thing your country does not have any volcanoes because mine does not either. However I'm sure yours has their fair share of natural disasters like mine. It is crazy how freakishly huge the volcano you shared is. Very interesting that the plant by it can produce electricity by using the volcano's heat.

  5. Hi Arianna! Very nice post! I had previously assumed that the Bahamas probably didn't have any volcanoes since it is such a flat, beautiful island, but it was nice to read and clarify my previous knowledge. It is weird that all countries have very different natural disasters that occur and some have a lot more than others. For example, my country Iceland has many volcanoes and active ones as well, whiles your country does not have any! It is interesting to compare our two countries to see how much they differ.
